Dongtan makes an ideal base for visiting the Mulhyanggi Arboretum, a 34-hectare property planted with more than 1,900 different species. Its name translates as “fragrance of water” and the arboretum was designed to explore the connections between water, woodlands and man. Stroll through the themed gardens and challenge yourself in the hedge maze before admiring the artificial waterfall.

History buffs shouldn’t miss the Doksanseong Fortress, which was where General Gwon Yul and his soldiers fought against the Japanese in 1593. It is believed to have been constructed during the Baekje Period, with several reconstructions and expansions over the centuries. Follow the trail that leads up to the fortress to wander between its ruined battlements and soak up the impressive views across the surrounding countryside.
