About Banja Luka

As one of the biggest cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Banja Luka is a hotspot for art, culture and cuisine. It isn’t as popular as Sarajevo and Mostar, but you will find some beautiful buildings and lively nightlife. Rafting trips along the Vrbas River will satisfy your appetite for adventure.

Things to do in Banja Luka

Beautifully reconstructed Ferhadija Mosque towers over the city. The original building dates back to the 16th century but was destroyed in the 1990s during civil unrest. Ancient masonry techniques were used to rebuild the mosque, which is now one of the finest examples of Ottoman Islamic architecture in the country.

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour features a unique striped façade built with layers of pink and gold travertine. Enormous golden domes cap the Orthodox cathedral, which was built in the 1930s, destroyed in World War II and faithfully reconstructed in 2004. A dazzling chandelier hangs from the central dome.

The enormous stone walls of Kastel Fortress loom over the banks of the Vrbas River. Visit the art gallery in the barracks and dine at the restaurant housed in the ramparts. Sit on the terrace and enjoy delicious Balkan cuisine accompanied by lovely river views.

Use Banja Luka as a launchpad for rafting adventures on the Vrbas River. The emerald-green river snakes through the city before hitting a series of rocky rapids. Depending on the time of year, the experience can be laid-back or exhilarating.

From atmospheric wine bars to Irish-style pubs, there are plenty of places to sip a drink in Banja Luka. Domestic beers like Preminger and Nektar are always popular choices. There’s plenty of live music to enjoy, as well as nightclubs for the younger crowd.

Getting around Banja Luka
