About Pendleton

Serving as the seat of Umatilla County, Pendleton lies on the banks of the Umatilla River in Oregon’s north-east. It is named after George H. Pendleton, an Ohio politician and lawyer, and rose to prominence in the late 19th century as a textile manufacturing hub. The city is also famed for its annual rodeo, the Pendleton Round-Up.

Things to do in Pendleton

You can delve into the local history at the Heritage Station Museum, which comprises a series of buildings at the city’s former railway station. In addition to the 19th-century Byrd Schoolhouse, there’s a barn and homestead displaying antique farming tools. Also forming part of the complex is a bright yellow caboose donated by the Union Pacific Railroad.

Magnificent views across the Umatilla River can be enjoyed from the Pendleton Riverwalk, which extends the length of the city. Along the way, it passes through several parks and takes in the historic Umatilla River Bridge. Near the western end of the walk is the famous Pendleton Roundup Grandstand, which has been hosting rodeos since 1910. Adjacent is a Hall of Fame filled with rodeo memorabilia.

Travelling with kids? Pendleton is home to the Children's Museum of Eastern Oregon, which is packed with hands-on and interactive exhibits. In addition to the Toddler Zone, there’s a firehouse, a grocery store and a science lab, plus a room dedicated to the Lewis & Clark exhibition. Colouring contests, tumble classes and science experiments are regularly held at the museum.

Getting around Pendleton

Eastern Oregon Regional Airport is a 10-minute drive from the centre of Pendleton and has regular flights to Portland. By road, Portland is just over three hours away. Long-distance buses connect to Pendleton while local services travel through the city. The centre of Pendleton is compact enough to explore on foot.
