About South Downs National Park

South Downs National Park is a sprawling expanse of green chalk down hills that stretches 140 kilometres across England from Winchester to Eastbourne. The area includes downland, heavily wooded areas and striking white cliffs, making for an enchanting destination for hiking and sightseeing.

The Seven Sisters Country Park area is the primary attraction, boasting magnificent bright white cliffs situated on the edge of the ocean. Here you can enjoy canoeing, birdwatching and cycling, or set up camp for an overnight adventure.

Phone ahead to stop in and enjoy wine tasting at Breaky Bottom Vineyard. The chalky soil attributes to award-winning white and sparkling vintages. Although not a touristy location, the working vineyards are more than happy to host tastings.

Head to Winchester to experience the most urbanised area of the park. Enjoy immersing yourself in history, spending the afternoon shopping at The Square or breaking for a long meal. If you’re interested in the area’s history, Winchester also contains one of the largest cathedrals in Europe.

Getting there

South Downs National Park encompasses a huge stretch of land between London and the south coast. Renting a car is the best way to get around the vast countryside. Enjoy individual areas as much as you can on foot, or take a canoe or kayak to paddle along the coastline.
